Summary

A shocking discovery of human bones reopens an almost fifty-year-old cold case―and rips apart the lives of a group of friends―in a riveting novel by Loreth Anne White, the Amazon Charts and Washington Post bestselling author of The Maid’s Diary 。 When human bones are found beneath an old chapel in the woods, evidence suggests the remains could be linked to the decades-old case of missing teen Annalise Jansen。 Homicide detective Jane Munro―pregnant and acutely attuned to the preciousness of life―hopes the grim discovery will finally bring closure to the girl’s family。 But for a group of Annalise’s old friends, once dubbed the Shoreview Six by the media, it threatens to expose a terrible pledge made on an autumn night forty-seven years ago。 The friends are now highly respected, affluent members of their communities, and none of them ever expected the dark chapter in their past to resurface。 But as Jane and forensic anthropologist Dr。 Ella Quinn peel back the layers of secrets, the group begins to fracture。 Will one cave? Will they turn on each other? The investigation takes a sharp turn when Jane discovers a second body―that of the boy long blamed for Annalise’s disappearance。 As the bones tell their story, the group learns just how far each will go to guard their own truth。

I absolutely loved this book。 It was gripping and I couldn’t put it down。 I loved that there were multiple POVs and felt that it added an extra layer of depth to the story。 You thought you knew what was happening right up to the end of the novel。 Each character's story was carefully crafted to get a look inside their head as to what was happening。 My only complaint was that I felt like the novel gave no resolution to the shore view six and what happened to them after the fact。 I would have enjoy I absolutely loved this book。 It was gripping and I couldn’t put it down。 I loved that there were multiple POVs and felt that it added an extra layer of depth to the story。 You thought you knew what was happening right up to the end of the novel。 Each character's story was carefully crafted to get a look inside their head as to what was happening。 My only complaint was that I felt like the novel gave no resolution to the shore view six and what happened to them after the fact。 I would have enjoyed knowing。 I also didn’t understand why Jane’s missing husband was such a prevalent side story within the book。 I really thought with how hard they pushed that story that his story would be resolved。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 Fell in love with all the characters。 I really want to read about Jane investigating more cold cases。 Could make a great series。

The story kept me turning the pages, especially since the novel has Kathy Reichs and Patricia Cornwell vibes。 I love a good mystery when bones and murder is involved。 There were enough twists and turnes to keep me guessing (and I am always wrong)。 An engaging read, and I look forward to more novels with the main character, Detective Jane Munro。

Jane, a grief stricken and pregnant detective, is given an assignment that links back to a cold case from over 40 years ago involving not one but two missing high school students。 There are a lot of characters involved here and it can be confusing to keep track of them all, but each person really adds a little more depth to the story。 I'm one who can usually see things coming but multiple times was completely surprised with the twists and turns this book offered。 While the last few chapters were Jane, a grief stricken and pregnant detective, is given an assignment that links back to a cold case from over 40 years ago involving not one but two missing high school students。 There are a lot of characters involved here and it can be confusing to keep track of them all, but each person really adds a little more depth to the story。 I'm one who can usually see things coming but multiple times was completely surprised with the twists and turns this book offered。 While the last few chapters were a bit difficult to stomach (there should definitely be a trigger warning) overall the story was engaging and I sped right through it。 Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a chance to read and review this book。 。。。more

Now mostly affluent, prominent members of their community, would everything they worked so hard to build crumble like the remains found under that chapel?Told in alternating points of view from Jane and several other characters, there was a quiet intensity infused in these pages that kept me reading long into the night。 Through the alternating points of view, I got to know Annalise, a teenage girl on the cusp of her life who was harboring a monstrous secret。 When a second body is found, the boy blamed for her disappearance, the investigation took a turn that I never could have predicted。 I do hope to hear more about Jane Munro as she was just as fascinating as was this cold case。 Many thanks to NetGalley for this early read。 This book will publish March 5, 2024。 。。。more

Will they turn on each other? This book hooked me from the start。 White’s writing is captivating and descriptive and perfectly sets up the scene for this chilling novel。 I really enjoyed the forensic aspect of the book。 Forensic anthropologist Dr。 Ella refers to our bones being a silent witness and therefore unquiet。 I really enjoyed learning about how all of the different pieces of evidence come together during an investigation。 There was a lot of tension throughout the book, and I was curious to see what secrets this friend group was keeping。 The ending was shocking and absolutely gut wrenching。 There were a lot of POVs, which made it hard to keep track of everyone, which at times can be confusing, but overall I enjoyed this one。 I highly recommend this well developed suspense novel。 This is my fourth book by the author and I am always impressed with her writing。 I look forward to reading her backlist of books。 Read if you enjoy:✔️Multiple POVs ✔️Shocking twist ✔️Cold case/murder mystery ✔️Forensics ✔️Suspense ✔️Police procedural Thank you NetGalley and MontLake for the ARC in exchange for my honest review。 Favorite quote (prepublication):“Sometimes real danger is invisible to people on the outside。 Sometimes danger is much closer than people think。” 。。。more

Thank you, NetGalley, for this book。I’m a fan of White’s and have read several of her books including Beneath Devil’s Bridge, A Dark Lure, In the Dark, and The Lucky Ones, and am always excited to read a new one。 However, this one fell flat for me。 The main character and plot were fine, but this book had way too much going on in the background that was totally unnecessary。As a book editor, I always suggest that characters move the plot forward and consolidate characters when possible。 This book Thank you, NetGalley, for this book。I’m a fan of White’s and have read several of her books including Beneath Devil’s Bridge, A Dark Lure, In the Dark, and The Lucky Ones, and am always excited to read a new one。 However, this one fell flat for me。 The main character and plot were fine, but this book had way too much going on in the background that was totally unnecessary。As a book editor, I always suggest that characters move the plot forward and consolidate characters when possible。 This book had so many characters and some of them had nicknames that were not at all needed。 The main character had a backstory that was fine, but then there was this random character who was thrown in as a previous love interest that served no purpose。 The plot is about a murder and who did it, which is nothing new, but the plot twist at the end was ridiculous and felt shoe-horned in。 I’m not going to give up on White, but this one didn’t work for me。 。。。more

Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for an ARC copy of The Unquiet Bones。 This book was。。。fine。 I think the "group of teenagers make a pact to keep a terrible secret, until many years later when the ugly truth catches up with them" trope is becoming really overdone and this mostly followed the same script as others I have read。 I also didn't love where they took the ending of the story。 Overall, I don't regret reading this but won't read it again or go out of my way to recommend it to other。 2。5 Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for an ARC copy of The Unquiet Bones。 This book was。。。fine。 I think the "group of teenagers make a pact to keep a terrible secret, until many years later when the ugly truth catches up with them" trope is becoming really overdone and this mostly followed the same script as others I have read。 I also didn't love where they took the ending of the story。 Overall, I don't regret reading this but won't read it again or go out of my way to recommend it to other。 2。5 stars rounded up。 。。。more

When I read a book by Loreth Anne White I feel as if I am in the story。 Her books are so descriptive and so captivating it is hard not to instantly get caught up in the story。 This was such a great storyline with just the right amount of twists to keep you guessing。 If your looking for a great suspenseful read pick this book because you will be reading all night!

Thank you to netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 When bones are found under an old church it shakes up an old cold case of a missing 16 year old girl。 This book is written from the perspective of a group of 6 friends that were suspected in her disappearance as well as the investigating detective。 Using DNA to crack a cold case is interesting but I thought that so many different view points slowed the story down and made it feel repetitive。

Thank you to Montlake and NetGalley for this ARC!I read my first book my Loreth Anne White earlier this year and fell in love with her as an author。 I love reading Canadian authors and have added all her other books to my TBR。The Unquiet Bones had to many twists and left me guessing right until the end。 The story flows brilliantly from the POV of many different characters。 The last half of this book had me staying up way too late to finish it as I needed to know who did it!Highly recommend picki Thank you to Montlake and NetGalley for this ARC!I read my first book my Loreth Anne White earlier this year and fell in love with her as an author。 I love reading Canadian authors and have added all her other books to my TBR。The Unquiet Bones had to many twists and left me guessing right until the end。 The story flows brilliantly from the POV of many different characters。 The last half of this book had me staying up way too late to finish it as I needed to know who did it!Highly recommend picking this book up。 。。。more

3。5 stars When human bones are found beneath an old chapel in the woods, evidence suggests the remains could be linked to the decades-old case of missing teen Annalise Jansen。 But for a group of Annalise’s old friends, once dubbed the Shoreview Six by the media, it threatens to expose a terrible pledge made on an autumn night forty-seven years ago。 Despite the intense police and media scrutiny, the group stuck to their story, their lies。 (Yes, this tired trope again!) Nearly fifty years later, three women are now digging for the truth。 Homicide Detective Jane Munro’s fiancé, Matt Rossi failed to return from a Solo hiking trip six months ago, and she is carrying his baby-a baby that he never even learned about。 It’s been an emotional few months since the disappearance and Jane has since been assigned to the Cold Case unit, so when the bones are discovered-the case falls to her。 Angela Sheldrick, a reporter known for reporting breaking news first, and for often “sensationalizing” stories, gets wind of the news and doesn’t mind putting it out there, before fact checking what she has learned。 Her goal is to get approval to host a reality crime series calls “Someone Always Knows” and this could be the case that sells her idea to her bosses。 And, forensic anthropologist, Dr。 Ella Quinn, will allow the “unquiet bones” to speak the truth。 Although this plot has been used much too frequently this year, what elevates this story a bit above the rest is the Science shared by Dr。 Quinn about forensic genealogy and familial DNA testing。 It is being used to solve many decades old murders such as the high profile Golden State Killer case, and most recently the case in Idaho involving a criminology student charged with killing 4 fellow university students。 Who knew that bones can will reveal if a person was healthy or ill, muscled or frail, vegetarian, or carnivore, and even if the person had been breastfed and for how long? I enjoyed this aspect of the story much more than the story itself。 But despite that, the women are great characters and there is unfinished business so I get the feeling we just might meet them again for another case in a second installment。 And, I would be okay with that! This title will be available on March 5, 2024。 Thank You to Montlake for the gifted copy provided through NetGalley。 It was my pleasure to offer a candid review! 。。。more
